Saucony Carrera XC3 | First Look

Available July 2017 – MSRP: $99.95

Built with the competitive cross country athlete in mind, the Saucony Carrera series has always focused on delivering ultra-lightweight performance. Debuting in 2013, the Carrera has consistently been one of the lightest cross country shoes on the market, and the newest edition of the Carrera, the XC3, is no different. It continues to weigh in at about 4 oz and comes in both a spiked and spikeless version. While the first two releases of the Carrera offered identical tooling with differing uppers, version three provides a completely new design that not only looks different but should also provide a faster and more aggressive running experience.

One of the biggest changes to the Carrera XC3 is the all-new spike plate that features a 5-pin design (instead of the previous 6 pin layout). We also see added traction through even stickier rubber on the heel and forefoot as well as larger lugs that should be able to handle slightly rougher conditions. Many runners also felt that the original Carrera tooling was too flexible, so the XC3 now features a new, stiffer plastic shank that runs the full length of the shoe. This addition should provide added torsional rigidity and create a more responsive running experience.

In order to keep weight at a minimum, the shoe features a lightweight, engineered mesh upper. The shoe still incorporates the ISOFIT design for a snug and seamless foot wrap, but the new material should add a little extra structure and durability.
